Callas De Navarre

Character History

Callas was born the third daughter to parents named Atievno and Isabow Navarre. Her Sisters, only 1 and 2 years older, are named Maria and Josephina. Callas lived near the town of Pomplona, Spain. Atievno tried to be a farmer but wasn't all that successful. He worked hard but never caught a break. Droughts, Floods, and insects took their toll. Most of the money that came into the house was from Isabow, who ran a laundress and seamstress business out of their house. Maria and Josephina took to being Seamstresses at an early age, but Callas never liked it. Her head was more in the clouds or in this case more into the horses. Her father owned one horse used for plowing and it was always where you found Callas. Atievno would set Callas on the back of the horse and then take her out to the fields and she would happily sit all day, riding around. By age eight, the fights began over Callas's future. Isabow didn't know what to do with the tomboyish daughter that couldn't sew or do laundry without forgetting what she was doing. Later found in the fields with the horse. She suggested to Atievno that the 3rd child should be sent away to the temple of Sucellus, god of Forest and agriculture. At least then she would be of some help to the family and her father. Atievno forbid it but Callas knew that her father was an easy man to wear down. That summer, the worst drought that she had ever seen killed most of the crops. As food prices rose, less people were willing to pay for dresses and fancy things that Isabow could sew. Their money dwindled lower and lower. A man came to see her father and from underneath the bed in her parents room, her father pulled a chest. This was something new to Callas, something new and exciting. Her father opened the chest and pulled out black leather armor and a sword that gleamed with its own light even in the house. The man, Callas later found out was named, Interno. Interno surveyed the sword for sometime and then left with both the sword and the armor. Atievno left the house very sullenly and Isabow sat in the kitchen and cried. Things went from downhill from there. The drought continued for a second year and they could no longer afford the house. Isabow took a job in Pomplona, working as a seamstress, Maria and Josphina as well. Money started to flow but it was too little, too late. Interno returned this time with the deed for the farm and the house. He brought along his little gang of enforcers, a cruel rat faced person named, Shoroun. A large woman in height, Natralla and a Moor named Afar. Interno and gang threatened Atievno, but it must have been straw that broke the camel's back. Atievno fought back and fought back indeed. He in minutes had thrashed the entire group within an inch of their lives. They ran, those that could back to Pomplona, tails between the legs. Interno vowed revenge and he got it. The next day, the local police arrived arresting Atievno and placing him in jail. His charge was attempted murder. His trial swift, it ended almost before it started. Guilty and sentenced to a labor camp near Barcelona for 10 years. Isabow sold all she could including the horse and moved to Pomplona. Isabow was never the same again. Callas lost her father and her horse all in one day. It was more than the nearly 10 year old girl could handle. One night she wandered into her mother who was crying as was usual, she told her that she would voluntarily go to a temple to study. Her mother hugged her and sent off to bed. A week went by and a delicate looking, raven haired woman arrived at the door. Her name was Endraya and she was going to take her to the temple to be trained. Callas packed her bags and walked out to meet her life as a cleric to Sucellus. She was surprised to find herself on the road to Provence, France to train at the Temple of Epona and with the order of the Knights Templar. Life was tough at first away from home but with each passing day it got easier. She made some friends, A french boy named Galvin, another spanish girl named Contessa, a German girl named Fredricka. She also made some enemies, a really obnoxious girl from Italy, named Nara and her cronies another girl from italy, Xora and a greek boy named Dmitri. It was a constant battle with them. They were the rich snobby ones and you and your friends were the poor. Endraya took a personal interest in you and kept in contact whenever she could. In your third year, a letter came to you from your mother, your father Atievno was presumed dead in a prison riot. They were unable to identify the body as the prison had burned to the ground. It didn't hit you as hard as it could have. Your absence from him for three years put some distance between you and the wound but it was still painful to hear. But somewhere in the back of your mind, since they couldn't find a body it wasn't your father. So maybe this is why you didn't grieve as much as you thought you should.

In your fifth year, after a particularly bloody encounter with Nara, in which both of you ended up with black eyes, bleeding lips and noses. You were hauled in front of Endraya and the headmistress, Ulan a swedish woman with a bad attitude. Endraya was ordered to take you into the field to finish your training and away from the temple. You thought this was odd and expressed the concern to Endraya as you headed back into Spain. Endraya told you that the Knights Templar and the Clerics of Epona had fallen from favor with the King of France. It was a sudden change in policy and strange behavior was afoot. Ulan had thought that the less Epona Clerics congregated together, the better, so the order came out to send the remaining acolytes to training in the field. Ulan had even taken Nara as an acolyte, another usual move. Endraya and you moved around a quite a bit, but mostly in the south of Spain and only about as far north as Madrid. It was a wonderful time for you. You mostly acted as wandering veterinarians, curing animal ills as you went along. At age 16, A letter caught up to you in Madrid. It was your sister Josphina. The letter told of your mother's grief over Atievno, how she had never gotten over it. One day she just disappeared. No notes, no nothing, just gone, all her stuff still in the house, but she was just gone. An investigation had been launched but the local police ruled out any foul play and assumed that she had left for greener pastures. Your sisters conducted their own investigation but to no avail. Their only lead, a neighbor across the street who thought he saw someone enter the house, died when a horse he was shoeing kicked him in the head. They had thought it odd especially since the horse was owned by an Epona Cleric named Nara. They thought that maybe you knew her. There was little you could do about it, so you stayed with Endraya. She had become your surrogate mother anyway.

You were 3 months from your 18th birthday, when you were called to border of Portugal and Spain. A small town named Salamanca was having a plague. Their animals were dropping like rain from the sky. It seemed at this time to be limited to forest animals but at some point it may switch to the livestock and on to humans. You and Endraya were sent to investigate. It was a strange disease. It killed with high fevers, scabs and then the lungs flooded with blood and killed the victim. A few survived but they were far between the deaths. It responded some with herbs but magic was useless only dropping it to the dormant stage only for it to flare again a week later. One night in the fog of a receding storm, Endraya went to check on the animals in her care. When she was gone for an hour, you began to worry. Looking for her you found the signs of a scuffle, a large amount of footprints of the human nature seemed to have been in here. She gave them a run, blood on the ground but the footprints led to a grove of standing stones. On the ground next to the stones was Endraya's hand clutching a marble rod with a strange script on it. It was just the hand and not the body. It looked like it was torn from her arm and just laying there. There was blood but not enough from this kind of wound. Like her body disappeared but the hand remained behind.

The plague lessened almost immediately after that and you returned to Provence to become a full fledged cleric. Ulan attended but Nara was nowhere to be seen. The Knights Templar were disbanding by the order of the king of France and the Cleric of Epona were expected to follow. You were ordered to travel to Lisbon Portugal with a Knight of the Order named Gaviao. It was a strange order and you spoke to Ulan of Endraya. For some reason, you kept the marble rod and didn't speak of it. She said it was a loss of great importance as she was the best plague healer of her time, but there was nothing to be done now. She expressed her regret and told you to report to Anasta in Lisbon and begin training more acolytes. You left France with Gaviao. He was a Knight but not a stuffy as most, his ideals were a bit different from the rest of them but he was a very nice older man. For several months you trained new acolytes, boring you silly. At least Gaviao was in the same boat, his posting was just as bad. One night October 10th, 1347, a late summer storm was approaching. A flash of lightning flashed out to sea and all hell broke loose.
