Veni, Midi, Vici

I came, I played music, I conquered.

In my search for the ultimate music format, I came across midi. It was... ok... Played through my Soundblaster, it sounded like somone playing a trumpet on the ocean floor... And that was the piano... Then I came across a MOD (Another music format) player called cubic player that did quite a cute trick with the Gravis Ultrasound general midi samples, allowing you to listen to midis like they were supposed to be heard.

This only had one small problem attached to it, Although Cubic player was perfect for my needs in sound quality, It lacked a bit in multitasking ability. It's a dos program, and gets very upset if you're not running it in the foreground. So I could listen to midis perfectly in DOS, but Windows still had the drowning trumpeteer.

Finally, after months of searching, I found something which did what I wanted (almost). A software wavetable synthesiser driver for windows. It eats CPU cycles, but it works. The midi rendition is not as good as Cubic, because it only uses a 1MB patch set, as opposed to the GUS 5MB set, but it gives a far more realistic sound than anything FM synthesis can dream up. The program I'm referring to is called Wingroove. Once you download and run it, it'll install itself as a driver for your midi out.
